PAU REVIEWS M.Sc. BIOTECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME The Advisory Committee meeting for reviewing M.Sc. Biotechnology programme, supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India under its Postgraduate Teaching Programme, was held at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). In his opening remarks, Dr SS Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, Ludhiana and Chairman of DBT Advisory Committee, said that PAU teaching programmes were formulated on the academic pattern of Ohio State University, USA. He emphasised that DBT should also financially support Ph.D. Biotechnology students. It may be mentioned that the School of Agricultural Biotechnology was established under the leadership of Dr SS Gosal, who was instrumental in starting the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in biotechnology. Dr Parveen Chhuneja, Director, School of Agricultural Biotechnology, informed that 10 seats in M.Sc. Biotechnology are supported under DBT PG teaching programme where students are provided fellowship and grant for carrying out advanced research. She presented the progress of DBT PG teaching programme for the last two years. She thanked DBT for the grant with the help of which laboratories have been strengthened and cutting edge research is being conducted. She stated that students getting DBT fellowship are more stable in a research and expecting good research publications from their thesis work. Dr Partap Pati, Professor and Coordinator Agricultural Research and Innovation, Department of Biotechnology, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and external academic expert gave inputs for strengthening the programme in collaboration with other state universities and institutes. He appreciated DBT PG teaching programme at PAU which is very diverse, and advanced research projects being carried out by the M.Sc. students. Dr Manoj Rohilla, DBT nominee, stressed to include the skill development activities in the above mentioned programme. He also suggested to invite members from Skill Council of India for training and cooperation with School of Agricultural Biotechnology. Dr Ajit Dua, CEO, Punjab Biotechnology Incubator, Mohali, Punjab lauded the smooth running of PG teaching programme and offered to extend help from Punjab Biotechnology Incubator, Mohali for skill development. Dr Malvinder Singh Malhi, Project Lead, Syngenta Foundation India, Industrial representative of the expert committee, proposed that the Syngenta will extend support for accelerating skill development in postgraduate students. He emphasised that School of Agricultural Biotechnology must work on genome editing to keep pace with global research initiatives. In the concluding remarks, Dr Gosal highlighted the diverse teaching programme and the strengths of PAU and invited all the committee members to visit PAU, Ludhiana for further interactions. Dr Ajinder Kaur, Professor of Biotechnology, proposed a vote of thanks.
