GROW TURMERIC FOR DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION: PAU TO FARMERS

Nov25,2022 | MEENU GALHOTRA |

In a series of Punjab Agricultural University’s Diamond Jubilee celebration activities, the School of Organic Farming, PAU, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Langroya organized a field day on “Improved Production Technologies of Turmeric” at Khalsa Farm of Sardar Paramjeet Singh Khalsa, Balachaur, district Shaeed Bhagat Singh Nagar. This programme was sponsored by the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Calicut, Kerala, in which about 40 farmers participated. Dr SS Walia, Principal Agronomist-cum-Director, said that field days were being organized by the School of Organic Farming to create awareness about resource conservative alternate crops. Dr Rajender Kumar, Principal Agronomist and Principal Investigator of the programme, discussed improved production practices for cultivation of turmeric. Adoption of PAU recommended varieties along with efficient agronomic practices can help the farmers to achieve higher productivity and higher returns, he advised. Dr Kumar stressed upon farmers to grow turmeric at least to meet their own requirements. Dr Tarsem Chand Mittal, Principal Extension Scientist, observed: “Since raw turmeric generally fetches lower price; so to get higher profits, farmers should opt for processing techniques of turmeric for small as well as commercial scale.” Dr Amandeep Singh Brar, Deputy Director, KVK, Langroya informed the farmers about diversification options including turmeric in district SBS Nagar and facilities available through KVK. Dr Amandeep Sidhu, Agronomist, briefed the farmers about organic certification of turmeric for higher benefits. Sardar Paramjeet Singh Khalsa, besides turmeric cultivation, has also initiated processing of turmeric, coriander, chilli and other such crops. He shared his valuable experience while proposing a vote of thanks.
